I had the pleasure of attending SHSMD’s virtual conference on October 12. Overall, it was a terrific extension of the in-person conference that took place the month prior.

The one-day virtual conference was filled with useful information on a wide variety of topics. Here are just a few key takeaways from the sessions I attended.

⭐💡🎤 Keynote: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion: A Global Perspective – Dr. Toni Flowers

“Information changes perspectives. More information often changes what we think about something that is right in front of us.”

“In healthcare – our decisions can mean life or death.”

“We need to slow down and give our minds the opportunity to make decisions.”

“Be aware of your biases and slow down before you act.”

“Explore opportunities to gain knowledge and alignment through collaboration.”

“Use the tenets of DEI to assist you to value everyone as priceless works of art.”

⭐💡🎤 Brand Promise Can Shape Culture, Engage Employees and Deliver Better Patient Care - Kate Burkhardt, Jackie Roberto and John Parran

“In healthcare, the patient experience IS the brand experience.”

“Brand promise = a consistent patient experience. It must be realistic and true.”

“Assessing a potential brand promise: will it guide employees in how we serve others?”

“Brand promises should be simple and easy to remember.”

⭐💡🎤 Poising Patients for a Healthy Future Using CRM Intelligence - Alan Tam and Bridget Reuter

This was a great session and the discussion brought up several important points:

HIPAA does NOT prevent you from contacting patients about services.

If you don’t have a CRM today, you are significantly behind the curve.

If you invest in a CRM, you need to resource it.

Too many organizations invest in a CRM, but then barely use it. That’s an expensive mistake.

⭐💡🎤 Our Needs Have Changed: Thriving with Post-Pandemic Mentorship – Megan Stinchcomb and Jann Holland

“Mentorship is not about what someone else can ‘do’ for you – it’s about facilitating growth so you can ‘do’ for yourself.”

“Mentors answer questions and offer perspective.”

“Sponsors use their connections to advocate for and actively participate in your career.”

“It’s unrealistic to view mentorship as a fast track to a promotion or an overnight career change.”

A closing thought

"You're never too experienced to make a 'rookie mistake.'” That idea came up during the mentorship session during a small group discussion.

I thought it was an important observation since our profession is constantly evolving and we are always learning - or at least we should be!

Continuous learning is one of the reasons I’ve been a SHSMD member for more than a decade. Events like the in-person and virtual conferences always help me think of new ways to do things and expand my knowledge about a variety of topics.

I hope you feel the same.

Now, we look ahead to SHSMD’s in-person conference next September in Chicago. I can’t wait to see you there!
